Shared Source is now up and running…

The Shared Source at Sitecore is now one step closer into making it easier for other Sitecore developers to start contributing with code that they have made and want to share with other developers. All the Sitecore Shared Source modules available at SDN now have their own project room, we are using the open source tool called Trac to manage the modules.

On SDN there is also now a list of all available modules to give a greater overview. This way developers can quickly navigate between the different modules if point and click between the long list in SDN becomes tedious.

The post created on SDN forums about the shared source have already gathered some attention, Sitecore developer Christopher Wojciech have contributed a project that should be available shortly. I am sure he will tell you more on his own blog http://blog.wojciech.org/ when he is ready to open it up to others. Then developers can join his modules like all the other Sitecore modules and build on top on an already good idea.

I of course also want to invite other Sitecore developers to share a module that they think can be of interest to others.

  1. Very nice! Trac seems really cool.
Is there anyway to add a discussion board or similar in the project rooms? For instance if I have a comment on the wiki module, and want to discuss it with others, how and where do I post it?

  2. Hi Jens,

We have two options that we are working with and I would like to get your opinion on how you think would be the best solution. One option is to implement a forum module on each individual module or the second option of having one Shared Source discussion board under forums in SDN.

Please let me know what you think.

  3. Hi Jimmie,

I would prefer a group called “Shared source” under the normal forum on sdn5 (like “developer talk”). In this group each module could have its own forum (like “General discussion”). Is that possible?

This gives a good overview, where you can see all activity, but also differentiate between the different modules.

    Cheers
    Jens

  4. Hi Jens,

I think that with 50+ modules and more and the way, it would generate a very long list in the forum.

A way to go is to simply have a single forum dedicated to all the modules. It would save space but it would lack the good overview that you mentioned.

Both options have their drawbacks but a single forum with all the modules would work.

Do you think that a single forum is workable, seeing that the threads will give away what module is in question?

    /Jimmie

  5. Hey Jimmie,
I’m still working on it 😉 I hope we can bring the shared source idea of sitecore on the next level … you have already done a good job… I like it 🙂

Btw: I think a special forum for all modules would be great, otherweise we have to mix it up with the developers talk …

  6. Hi All,

I have just created a forum for the shared source modules. At the moment we have a single forum for all modules but when there start a lot of activity for a single module, I will create a sub forum for that module.
So Jens there is the possibility to have a forum for every module but to start out with a single forum I think would do and Chris, the forum is placed in the developer talk group but it shouldn’t interfere with the other content there.

So go check it out and read the introduction for some of guidelines I have set up.

  7. Interesting to know.
